You know my husband has a severe infection in his intestines. I have seen alot that posted on KU about this stomach virus going around that lasts for weeks.

Well we might be closer to finding out we have all be poisoned! I am curious as to how many people have actually had this problem and not reported to the CDC or Health officials.

packged salads could be linked to colon infections

TexasOma (Mod) --- 10 years ago -

What my understanding from today's news is only 2 states have this confirmed link to the packages salad. They wouldn't give the name of the packager....they should have.

Also, this is a parasite, not a bacteria. What confuses me is they said the patients are prescribed ANTIBIOTICS....why antibiotics for a parasite?

Prayers your husband makes a full recovery soon.

AngieKaye --- 10 years ago -

he will thanks. They gave us a diag of colonitis (sp), But said almost his entire intestines were infected. He did get sick right after eating a Jack n the box messy burger... started as vomiting almost immediately then fested over weeks til he couldn't stand it no longer. He's alot better and yes took 2 different antibiotics one being the same they give you for anthrax

TexasOma (Mod) --- 10 years ago -

WOW,sounds like what they are reporting for this parasite. I buy package salad all the time! It is so sad that we can no longer trust or food supply.

I read somewhere or heard it on the news that the FDA is considering a new ruling that anyone getting their foods from suppliers/growers outside the US must make sure they meet the same standards as the growers here in the US. Why wasn't this thought about sooner ? Why wasn't it enacted sooner? Why do we keep having people get so sick from bad foods?

I do not trust packaged salads.

grandma again --- 10 years ago -

no..no...no! never, ever buy packaged salad. they put chemicals on it to keep it fresh. i mean, think about it. they pick the stuff, cut it in a machine, wash it in a machine, package it in a machine. if you buy lettuce fresh it only lasts a few days. that stuff lasts forever and even tastes like plastic.

i do not trust packaged salads either.

TexasOma (Mod) --- 10 years ago -

GA - I'm beginning to see that. I'm pretty sure that the various restaurants use the packaged salad mixes from CISCO - so I guess it will be hard to avoid the packaged salads. But I can buy Romaine and Iceberg and make my own mix.

I'm so tired of the industry messing with my foods.

Another item I now am careful about is shrimp. If you will look on the package, many are harvested in Viet Nam etc. I saw a documentary not long ago showing the filthy conditions these shrimp were harvested from. Sewage canals drained into the waters the shrimp come from!!!!! It was so gross and upsetting to think I had not thought about where these shrimp came from before. I now only buy shrimp that says USA or Gulf Coast on the package. You have to look for it--often Viet Nam etc. is in small print.

TexasOma (Mod) --- 10 years ago -

I saw that same documentary. Gross, gross, gross.

Our grandsons live down in Santa Fe, so when I go pick them up and I have a hankering for shrimp, we drive over to San Leon and go to the old Hillman's and buy fresh off the boat. There are some other places in Kemah, but I just like using Hillman's because it's a long time family operation.

If I get a shrimp attack and can't go down there, I do check the country of origin. You should do that on all of your seafood products. It might be cheaper to buy Vietnamese products - but is it clean? YUCK.

think about it... alot of restaurants use packaged lettuce and such. Like Subway doesn't chop their own lettuce its prepackaged. My husband got sick from eating a Jack n the box mssy burger just took weeks to fulling infect his entire insides. And so many go un reported to the CDC

I knew there was a reason I don't eat salads...

I saw a dead bee in a packaged salad at The Heb. Now if I want a take home salad I trust the fast food joints. I figure they cut and washed the stuff today so my only decision is the dressing. Anyone know how to make Landry's honey mustard balsamic vinaigrette? It's da best!

Get well soon!!

With a google search I found this:

CopyKat Recipes

and this:

Landry's Honey Mustard --- might be the real thing.

Eating at Hard Rock cafĂ© in San Francisco (I think it was SF) I had a salad and saw something moving. Turned out to be a lady bug. I was told they come in on the lettuce.

Just stuck --- 10 years ago -

I had a salad for lunch on Friday, I brought it from home. It was Organic Romaine lettuce, by the time I got home did I get sick. I was thinking all I had was a salad, how could that be bad for you? I went to bed real early & when I got up on Saturday I was still not feeling well & it took to about 1pm to feel OK. It really makes you think of our food supply. I always wash all the veggies. Time to grow our own.

FANCY PANTS --- 10 years ago -

From what I understand the packaged salad came from Mexico. As a general rule I will not buy anything that is grown in Mexico and other countries. But when we eat out I have no control over that. So, if it is not cooked I do not order it. I feel that the people in other countries do not think about washing hands and being as clean as the workers here are. Although, it does and can happen in the USA too. When I buy packaged salad even though it says prewashed I always wash it again and again.

AngieKaye --- 10 years ago -

heres the link. I thought it would be national stores and restraunts! ARGH isn't anything safe anymore?

cdc reports almost 500 illnesses now. in 16 states

AngieKaye --- 10 years ago -

Olive garden and others are reported on this list. Who washes their salad when brought to a table at a restaurant?

Bornanraisedkw --- 10 years ago -

I know I was sick for weeks!!!!!!! Weeks!!!! Throwing up and out the other end. I went to the doc and took Flagyl. Within hours I was feeling better. I also had to take diflucan for a yeast infection in my intestines.

MonzaRacer (Admin) --- 10 years ago -

AK, how's your DH doing...

AngieKaye --- 10 years ago -

Thanks for asking. A lot better. After the 10 days of 2 antibiotics he finally is eating good. But still watching spicy foods that seem to agitate it. We need to get him the endoscopy and colonoscopy done soon. But with the dang obamacare stuff his deduct went from 1000 to 5000 so we will have to pay for all of it !
