Something about using alcoholic wine during communion is keeping me up all night perplexed. I'm not sure why, but this keeps spinning around in my head. Thoughts?
I know when I was in the Presbyterian Church we had communion it was grape juice not wine. Though everyone thought it was wine. I truly dont think they use actual wine.
What I mean is. The minister/ priest will state its wine as to repeat the words of Christ to his decibels. Just as breaking the bread as part of the words of Christ. They dont actually use wine for their is children at communion normally.
The funeral I just went to not only had real wine, but it was in a large cup that every.single.person.drank. from. I took the wafer but no way in hell am I drinking from that cup. I am a germaphobe on a good day but that seems like it would be pushing it even for a normal person. Yuck.
I know me too but the church here has one big cup and everyone either drinks directly from it or dips their bread in it and then eats the bread. They said it is alcoholic wine and that you can't get sick from it because it has been blessed :/ It isn't blessed by Jesus Himself though so I'm at a loss! I'm used to getting my own little shot sized cup of grape juice and a wafer.
Does Jesus want us to drink alcoholic wine during a sacrament?
I have no doubt you can get sick from it. Yuck. If everyone dipped I'd be ok with that. Because the wafer would not be a double dip situation. But whatever.

I am Episcopalian - my Catholic friend calls me "Catholic lite". We use to come home from our perspective churches and compare the readings and the sermon and each time the readings were the exact same and often the sermon was extremely similar. (The readings are 1 from the Old Testament, 1 from the New Testament and 1 from the Gospel. It is the differences where she says we are Catholic lite.
Anyhow, in our religion we do not use grape juice, we use wine. Jesus used wine during his last supper, we also use wine. The wine is watered down and blessed by the priest. You will not get drunk from the tiny sip you take during communion, you won't even get a buzz. It will not harm a child who partakes of communion, it will not turn them into alcoholics. It's just a tiny sip and children are not encouraged to take communion until they are 'confirmed', although some parents push the issue and want their young ones to partake also.
Confirmation teaches the young person the tenants of the church and the reasons behind the sacraments, why we take communion, why we genuflect, etc....the whys and wherefores of the church. It is a serious experience, not babysitting or playtime (at least back when I was confirmed and when our kids went through their confirmation classes. I cannot speak for today because things in the world have changed tremendously since the 80's...in may ways for the worst.
I am also a germaphobe...but I really do not think the tiny amount of wine you sip will make you sick. People do not spit back into the cup, they take a sip, the priest wipes the edge and turns the cup ever so slightly between people. The challis is normally silver or gold, which is should repel germs, especially when wiped between users. It is cleaned thoroughly by the Alter Guild at the end of the services for the day.
I have dipped my wafer since I became an adult and discovered I could. I do not submerge the wafer, I just barely put the edge of the wafer into the wine (no one double dips). I seriously doubt that tiny amount of wine will carry enough germs to make anyone sick, nor will it get anyone drunk. Plus, IMO, it's faith in God to protect us from illness that will keep me from getting sick. We are sharing the body and blood of Jesus as instructed by Jesus to his Disciples. God will protect us.
Smoochie - don't obsess over it. Just accept that which ever is offered at the church you attend is 'the Body and Blood of Christ. It is a representation of Jesus and it is to remind you of Jesus' life.
I find this to explain the Sacrament
"For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it, and said, "This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me." 25 In the same way He took the cup also, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me." 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord?s death until He comes. 27 Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup," (1 Cor. 11:23-28).
Whether is is wine or grape juice, IMO we are suppose to focus our thoughts on Jesus, not the type of drink. Obsessing takes way thinking of the meaning of the Blessed Sacrament. I don't think having a small sip of wine during Communion is going to keep one out of Heaven. God wants us to celebrate our Lord Jesus Christ.
Hiya Pepper....when I'm not out zipping around, it's in the garage. BUT I met Bernie and AMan today while I was out running errands. I recognized the dogs first then got brave and went up and said..." excuse me but is one of these babies Bernie?" LOL We chatted for just a minute, it was awesome!
.keep trying to dig up drama, you're really good at it.
it's hard to understand how you and others can justify to yourself statements such as you just made
you're the one who initiated the drama...you came on this thread...not to comment about the topic...but with the sole purpose of making a remark about me
