Anyone have good suggestions for school breakfasts? Preferably things that can be made ahead of time and heated up?

TexasOma (Mod) --- 11 years ago -

Someone on here had some good ideas with oatmeal or granola, fruit and yogurt in the fridge the night before.

I like making fritattas early in the week, cutting and warming when I'm ready and adding fruit to balance it off.

My junk food breakfast is Cheerios and milk or Corn Flakes w/ sliced bananas and milk. Occasionally I like an Eggo sandwich -- I heat the eggo, put a little butter on one side and apricot preserves on the other, put together and cut into quarters. I don't like syrup that much, so I do something similar to my pancakes.

There are so many

I make pancakes or waffles and then put them in the toaster.

Banana nut muffins, freeze them, and then pull them out the night before.

Egg tacos is another thing my kids like.

The frittata is a good idea..

Granola and yogurt would work too, but I'd have to go get little containers or parfait cups so it can just be grab and go.

I have seen small 1/2 Rubbermaid type containers that would work. I've seen even smaller but those seemed impractical.

I have lots of the red topped storage containers that my Hillshire Farms sandwich meats come in. Rather than recycle them, I use them over and over for small storage things and leftovers. Really work out well and they were cheap --- free.

They even sell that size in Walmart in the section with plastic wrap & aluminum foil - they call them throw away containers....not me, I keep on using until they get a crack then into the recycle they go.

They are the perfect size for putting chopped fruit in the night before, then add cereal and milk for a super quick meal.

Bumping this thread!!!!

I found on my Facebook page today something that might work for make ahead breakfasts.

RECIPE:

EGG MUFFINS

Egg Muffins!!!

These are one of my all-time favorite & EASY meal-preps. (THEY SAID THIS, NOT ME!)

Spray a muffin/cupcake pan w/ non-stick spray.

Fill with ANYthing you want: ham & broccoli, chicken & carrots, spinach w/ feta & tomatoes, steak & bell peppers....whatever you have in the fridge. (Note: add all veggies RAW - they will cook to perfection during the baking process)

Mix approx 1 egg per/muffin in a blender w/ a splash of milk. Pour directly into each cup just below the rim.

Top with shredded or sliced cheeses of your choice.

Bake at 425 degrees for approx 20 min.

Let cool before removing from pan

These can be stored in your fridge for up to 3-4 days! Simply warm in the microwave for a quick breakfast on-the-go!

grapefruit sections

Nurse Oma kicking in here. If you are taking any kind of medication, please make sure that you can have grapefruit or grapefruit juice. Unfortunately some medications are negated by having grapefruit - anytime during the day or night....it is a forbidden fruit. One of the medications is cholesterol drugs like Lipitor, Zocor, etc....can't have grapefruit.

Froggie --- 11 years ago -

I didn't know that Oma, DH takes cholesterol meds.....I need to keep that in mind.

Thanks!

WebMD on Grapefruit and medications

As it stands, there are now more than 85 drugs that may interact with grapefruit. The number of drugs that may result in potentially fatal side effects when mixed with grapefruit increased from 17 to 43 during the past four years. This equates to more than six new potentially risky drugs a year.

The list includes some statins that lower cholesterol (such as atorvastatin, lovastatin, and simvastatin), some antibiotics, cancer drugs, and heart drugs. Most at risk are older people who use more prescriptions and buy more grapefruit.

Here’s what happens: Grapefruit contains furanocoumarins, which block an enzyme that normally breaks down certain medications in the body. When it is left unchecked, medication levels can grow toxic in the body.

It’s not just grapefruits, either. Other citrus fruits such as Seville oranges (often used in marmalade), limes, and pomelos also contain the active ingredients (furanocoumarins), but have not been as widely studied.

An article with a list and more information.

As a result, more of the drug winds up in the bloodstream, and toxic drug levels or overdose can occur, resulting in:

respiratory failure
gastrointestinal bleeding
bone marrow suppression in patients with weak immune systems
renal toxicity
acute kidney failure
sudden death
