grandma again --- 11 years ago -

Buddy is sick and throws up everything. I am needing a Saturday vet. He has been doing this for over a week.

I left last Sunday for a cruise and just got home yesterday. When I left he had been throwing up so i made a big container of chicken rice so he would have something that should have stayed in him. I thought he was just having a little tummy issue. Well, my hubby thought that was not enough for him after day 1 of me leaving and put some dry dog food with it so the stuff came right back up and he has not eaten since.

He has been doing this for over a week now. I gave him a bath last night and he did well with that. Prior to that, his nose was warm and dry to the touch. This morning his nose is cool and wet to the touch though.

He is not eating or drinking and is staying inside.

Personally, I believe he has a sweet potato slice stuck some place that he did not chew up well and it is trying to digest.

soooooo....does anyone know of a good saturday vet? my vet is not open on saturday

AngieKaye --- 11 years ago -

Loop 494 is open til noon or 1

Froggie --- 11 years ago -

The emergency vet over by Deerbrook is open Saturday and Sunday. Poor Buddy, keep us posted please.

grandma again --- 11 years ago -

called and they are overbooked with emergencies. :(

they gave me some other vets in kingwood that i might try.

i really want my vet. :(

Froggie --- 11 years ago -

I know how you feel, but you may have to go see whoever you can get in with. What kind of dog is Buddy...and how old is he?

TexasOma (Mod) --- 11 years ago -

Froggie, he is an Australian Shepherd...sweet dog.

GA, Does your vet have an after hours number? If so, call that number & maybe the answering service will have him call you back.

Hug Buddy for me. Poor baby.

Froggie --- 11 years ago -

I hope she found somewhere to take him. Hug Buddy for me too....poor baby.

FabFive --- 11 years ago -

It really does sound like an obstruction. I don't want to scare you, but it is an emergency. Praying for your fur baby :(

Meme (Mod) --- 11 years ago -

Oh no ga..Please keep us updated on Buddy!! Puppy prayers for buddy.

AngieKaye --- 11 years ago -

Hope bud will be ok..

And speaking of vets. We had to go and spend another 200 but this time on Itchi the malamute. She tried to jump up at a cat on the fence.. landed wrong and we feel she dislocated her hip. The dang vet wanted almost 900 to just check her with an xray, they can't do much else. I almost fainted. We just got her the morophine shot brought her home and watching her.

She hurts so much I couldn't get her to walk on the wood floors. I guess she will have to hold her bowels til this meds wear off. She was whining and crying but now she's snoring...

Do ya'll know if Crosby vet is open tomorrow?

grandma again --- 11 years ago -

well, we did spend about $600 at Deerbrook Animal Emergency. They gave him injections under the skin of fluids, an antibiotic, (even though his labs were good) and a shot for throwing up. i opted out for xrays and am praying i did not make the wrong decision.

Buddy still refuses to eat at this point. I have some Lactulose to give him every 8 hrs to aid his digestion system.

He has slept all day long and is not wanting to be bothered much. I will be glad when Dr Elmer opens Monday. I am afraid he has an obstruction of the bowel because the tech said his stool was very hard when she took a sample for testing for parasites. (I gave him some medicine I have here at the house for that but it has not helped yet though).

I most likely will be taking Buddy back for xrays tomorrow if he is not better.

AngieKaye --- 11 years ago -

make some chicken broth, get a syringe and shoot it down his throat. Just dont hold his head straight up, hold it level to the ground or it will hit his lungs. You can also get some baby food chicken and rice or something in the jars, he might eat that... its easy on their tummy too

Thats the same vet we just got back from... lord they are expensive!

AngieKaye --- 11 years ago -

did they check his teeth? Wondering if a tooth infection or gum infection making his stomach sick

grandma again --- 11 years ago -

he said nothing was abnormal and he was just at the range for needing liquids to avoid beginning dehydration.

i have tried chicken broth and he just puts his head up and walks over to his bed and lays back down. he is not the least bit interested in any food or water.

he still has liquid under his skin that has not moved from the injections. they told me to expect this and it is normal.

lawdy, lawdy! he is my baby. he needs to get well.

by the way, his literature says to NEVER give baby food meats to a dog. just thought i would let you know.

AngieKaye --- 11 years ago -

yeah I dont normally I usually take the dog food soak it in water then make it really liquidy to put in a syringe, and I force feed. I have had to do this to my beagle when that IAMS thing happened. We treated her at home and she is fine, but her throat had almost closed up.

Buddy is such a sweet boy... I really feel bad he's sick :( He will get thru this.. maybe its just the tummy flu all us humans just got over

Froggie --- 11 years ago -

GA.....I'm so sorry!!!! I know how you feel, my fur babies ARE my babies, especially little man Hudson.

I hope Buddy gets better soon, you are doing the right thing to be at your vets office tomorrow morning. Poor poor Buddy.....and Momma!!

FabFive --- 11 years ago -

I will be saying a prayer for Buddy. Please let us know how he is throughout the day and after the Vet tomorrow. :(

grandma again --- 11 years ago -

thank you, fabfive. i will do that. this morning he met me wagging his tail but did not stay up very long. he does not seem to be in any pain what-so-ever. he just is sort of weak and not his normal self. he did walk outside and lay down by the car. i left him out for just a couple of minutes and let him right back in because he kept looking at the door. guess he was looking for me. lol.

believe me...i am watching him closely.

grandma again --- 11 years ago -

seems as though i have found out Buddy was being fed my special food of cooked rice in chicken broth and chicken breasts AND his regular food. ugh!!!

when, oh, when will i ever learn to only keep Buddy in my care or that of Lynda at Almost Home Pet Retreat when I am gone...or doglady, of course.

well, we will see where this one is heading. i think his gut must just be in shock....right along with our bank account!

i just wanted to update those concerned.

TexasOma (Mod) --- 11 years ago -

Glad his tail has a little bit of wag coming back. Get well Buddy.

justforfun1 (Mod) --- 11 years ago -

It is odd, when our Yorkies get an upset tummy they will eat very thin bladed grass and throw up what is bothering them. If you see them eating that one kind of grass you know they have to throw up. Glad Buddy is doing a little better GA. The things we do for our pets amazes me and the love we have for them is beyond belief.

FabFive --- 11 years ago -

GA I have to warn you that if it is impaction, there is a very high chance of surgery. It might involve resection of the intestines especially if there is necrosis.

I will warn you that there are a bunch of bad things that can happen between now and until after surgery. To spare your heart, I will not say what they are but please pray.

I am saying a prayer for Buddy that he is a ok and that this is going to be simple and easy to fix. Also that it is cheap. There is a lot you can do in the way of nursing him instead of keeping him at the Vet if you are brave and have the time. It can save thousands. Explain to the Vet that you only have X amount of money to work with so he needs to use his experience and waste no money. You would be surprised how good they are about spending your money unnecessarily. They can save you a bunch of money if you just ask.

grandma again --- 11 years ago -

i am just praying it will not come to that fab. he is now seemingly very loving and happy. he just is not eating or drinking. he takes his stool softener and his med the vet gave me for his gut with no problems today. he did pee a bit last night but that is all he has done, besides let me brush, pet and love on him. right now he is in the bath tub because of all the thundering. i wrapped him in a towel since i still have not located his thundershirt.

FabFive --- 11 years ago -

I'm praying for him too, GA. I sincerely hope this is a cheap, no big deal thing.

Meme (Mod) --- 11 years ago -

Ss did he eat your chicken rice and dog food while you were gone? Is that what is making him sick the two together? I hope and pray for buddy. It's so hard b/c they can't tell you what is wrong with them. Please keep us updated ga.

grandma again --- 11 years ago -

meme, i made him a nice batch of rice cooked with chicken broth and then some chunks of chicken in it. that way gpa only had to add a little warm water to it to heat it up. i told him to only give buddy 1/2 cup of that every morning and one every night. i told him do NOT give him any of the new food in the bag i had bought because that is what made him start throwing up in the first place. that was the reason i put him on chicken and rice diet. yes, buddy was eating the chicken and rice just fine when i left. anyway, gpa misunderstood, i found out this afternoon, and he was feeding buddy his normal amount of the dog food AND the 1/2 cup of chicken and rice in the morning and in the evening. i could not get him to the vet before leaving on my cruise because the vet was not open. he was suppose to take buddy to the vet if he was not better Tuesday. it must have been a total nightmare around here for them is all i can say.

buddy has taken a few sips of water but still refuses to eat. i even tried feeding him some raw Stella's food and he will have no part of it.

he is down for the night. he has had all of his meds and i am taking mine and going to bed. we will be seeing our own vet tomorrow.

yes, i will update tomorrow as soon as i see the vet. i am just praying he has no obstruction.

FabFive --- 11 years ago -

GA I am waiting anxiously to hear about Buddy!

Froggie --- 11 years ago -

Me too.

grandma again --- 11 years ago -

just waiting here. he is at Dr Elmer's office to be seen as Dr Elmer can work him in between scheduled appmts.

i am going to get busy around here mowing to get my mind off things, i think. it is my riding lawn mower so the ride will probably do me some good.

TexasOma (Mod) --- 11 years ago -

Well, tell Dr. Elmer there are people waiting here to find out....to work Buddy in faster cause we are impatient. :-(

Riding the lawnmower is good for getting your mind off things - I do love riding and plotting my next turn - kinda takes you mind away from the here and now.
