I have a friend from Germany who is constantly comparing the U.S to her native country of Germany. I try to slough it off and say something witty or fairly smart, but she keeps going. It's not all the time but she fits it in a lot.

For example today, the topic of security comes up, she goes on and on about how secure things are in Germany, the doors on their homes etc and how ours are inferior!

How do you tell someone who you consider a friend that the constant comparing gets annoying...without telling them it's annoying!?!?

It kinda depends on how close friends you are. If you are very close then you can outright tell her that her constant comparing US to Germany is irritating. That you know that US is not all that, but that Germany has it problems too.

If she's just a so-so friend then I would just let her brag. It probably isn't worth your time to tell her how you feel.

Thank you Tex....

I guessing consider her a so-so maybe a little more than that friend so it's really not worth letting her comments and comparisons ruffle my feathers. But that's just it, there is no comparing a country the size of my thumb completely governed and controlled differently than that of a country the size of 3 hands governed and controlled differently! Not equal and fair playing ground.

Just ignore it. She's homesick.

Just ignore it. She's homesick.

Or she's just TRYING to ruffle your feathers. Some people are just like that and when you let them get to you, they win/you lose. Best to just totally ignore any attempt to put down the US.

My understanding of other countries, like France, Greece, Spain, and apparently Germany, just do not like America or Americans and they look down on our country and our citizens. When our friends did a cruise of the Mediterranean, they said the people in Greece were exceptionally rude to Americans. Your friend may be of that mindset.

I would probably limit my exposure to her - I don't deal with people who are rude to the core.

Our friend's just pulled their yacht into Greece yesterday, I'll let you know what they say about rudeness to Americans.

But in all fairness, Americans have the bad reputation for a reason. There's a real sense of entitlement and it gets old.

At least America's economy hasn't collapsed...yet! Greece's socialist "utopia" should be a wake up call for us. People are leaving their children at churches and orphanages because they can't afford to feed them. WOW!

Greece grapples with soaring numbers of abandoned babies and children

If she hates America so much, why is she over here?
