I always take my used items to one place, New Horizons, in New Caney on Community Drive. They are located in the strip center with the Ace Community Hardware.

For years I donated to other places but discovered they were place making the owners rich.

The things that are donated here are sold at a resale shop. The proceeds go to help those with developmental disabilities. They actually train individuals certain life experiences that build self esteem and promote personal independence at home, work in in the community.

What a great bunch of people! I have taken lots and lots of things from my old shop over in the past few weeks and donated. Every time, they meet me up front with grocery baskets and take everything in, thanking me constantly. I give them all hugs and thank THEM.

Last week they received lots of things from an estate and were just delighted!

If you get a chance, go by and check them out. They have good prices and get new things put out on the floor daily.

You will surely go away with joy in your heart knowing you have helped them, even if it is just with a smile and a thank you.

I was in there the other day...lots of good, gently used items and clothing. And you"re right GA, the employees are great.

I like donating to New Horizons too. I also like HAAM, Family Time, Salvation Army and Star of Hope Mission. All of those help the needy and they don't make themselves rich off the donations. DAV/Purple Heart, Goodwill and many others only have their hand out to make money for their owners...Goodwill being the worst.

I haven't been to New Horizons recently because of the construction in the area - guess I'll have to find a good detour coming down from Cleveland and swing by there.

Perfect timing on this thread, our village is having their garage sale next Saturday....most of the things I have here will be from my BFF's house she is selling here in Kingwood. Items not purchased will be donated.

Thanks for the heads up GA!!!!

For years I donated to other places but discovered they were place making the owners rich.

We donate to North East Mission on 494. They keep the stuff and give it to needy families. We also volunteer there during the holidays packing and handing out food, for the seniors Christmas party, and during Mission Possible (during the summer).

I'm sure that some of the workers there are paid. Are they scamming us.

rightwingmom --- 11 years ago -

I've donated to Texas Paralyzed Vets, Good Will and Salvation Army. I've also donated to the thrift store on 494 between Ford Rd. and 1314. Years ago someone told me they help support a battered women's center, but I never verified that.

I'll have to check out New Horizons. Thanks for the tip!

TexasOma (Mod) --- 11 years ago -

Fancy Pants, I doubt they are scamming just because they have a few paid employees, even if the management takes a salary, doesn't mean they are scamming.

The owners of the Goodwill and of the Purple Heart/DAV have both made the news (long time ago) for their opulent lifestyles. That, too me, is scamming...they take too much money for their own pockets.

New Horizons also has the Lone Star Gallery that is on hwy 59 in New Caney. I can not remember which exit though. It has been a long time since I have been there. They have a learning center there for the folks I mentioned in my very first comment.

rightwingmom, that information is correct about Family Time, the resale shop on 1314 that you mentioned. they do help battered and abused women and children with sales from their resale shop there.

FancyPants, North East Mission is an excellent place to donate to and volunteer at. Thank you for helping out there. I am sure you make a difference to so many lives.

AngieKaye --- 11 years ago -

Everything I do goes to HAAM or Family Time. I truly trust them as NO ONE is paid they only have volunteers. They use most of the money they get to help our community people that need it.

Unlike Goodwill and Purple heart that are profit making. I understand about employing people that need it but Kroger's and Randalls does that too. I dont even walk into Goodwill anymore, not after being in trucking and knowing where our donations go and why. They ship it over seas by the pound for profit. They ship it under "rags" Purple Heart is a scam they do NOT help our veterans in fact they have absolutely NOTHING to do with vets. Its misleading.

They do.

and thanks for posting GA. I surly will check out New horizons, someone else told me about them as well. I have a huge bag right now that needs to be donated. I go thru our house about 3 times a year and start tossing stuff we dont use or dont like .....

I think you are right.

North East Mission is an excellent place to donate to and volunteer at.

Being from Kingwood and not knowing what hardship is, I thought it a good place for my kids to learn that lesson. It is something all kids should experience regularly. I think kids can learn a lot volunteering.

You are so right Fancy - I wish all parents felt that way.

I think that if students are submitting college applications, they are required to show some volunteer work...this is a good way to get your youngsters started in that area.
