A few years ago I replaced the roof on the house and the contractor put lead sleeves over the vent pipes poking through the top of the roof to seal around them to prevent rain leaking into the attic.

Well, little did I know (at the time anyways) that squirrels love to chew lead and now they've completely chewed away all the lead sleeves leaving gaps around the pipes for water to get in the attic when it rains.

Well, I need to get this fixed ASAP, so any recommendations for someone who can make the repairs is much appreciated.

Thanks in advance ...

I have a guy who use to do this...as of 3 years ago. Reasonable and good. He works full time but got my work done in a reasonable timeframe.

Alfred Brown 832-443-5670

Tell him "the friend of David & the one who gave him the plants" I doubt he would recognize my name.

How come squirrels don't get less poisoning?

Our flashing is tin...why did they use lead?

Thanks Oma, I'm going to call him and I'll let you know if remembers you.

At the time they replaced the shingles, lead seemed like a good idea. However, I had no idea squirrels like to chew on it. They don't ingest it, they just chew it to pieces.

Someone once told me they do it to keep their teeth sharp and to prevent them from growing too long ... sorta' like a Beaver, but I have no idea if that's true.

Also, I learned that in many areas it's illegal to use lead because of the environmental concerns.

I like the idea of a tin cover and that's what I want installed.

Thanks again ...

Roof roof co out of Aldine did our house and they were insured bonded and were great. Also did my whole house from tear down to complete in 2 days

Thanks Oma, thanks Angie ...

I was able to locate someone in Kingwood (Ron Potok) that will make the repairs and have arranged for him to come out next week. He's reputable and quoted me a price over the phone that was very close to what I expected.

Oma, I did leave a message for Alfred, but I haven't heard back from him ... it wasn't that long ago, so he probably hasn't listened to it. But if he calls me back, I'll mention you as the person that referred him.

Thanks again Oma and Angie!

Why don't the squirrels die from chewing on all that lead. They did that to our vent pipes too but it never was bad enough to leak.

The fellow who repaired my roof said they chew the lead because it has "salt" in it. I didn't know that.

In my situation, those little %&*%@ actually chewed through the shingles to get to the base of the lead sleeves leaving a opening (basically a hole) between the pipes and roof into the attic.

He installed a galvanized metal sleeve & base over them and I doubt those little #@&^%* will ever get through those.

We used Ron Potok to re-roof our house when we first moved up here. He was very, very good - I didn't know he was still in business & didn't have his number. You will be pleased with his work.

^^^ He did an excellent job, Oma, and the price was right, too ^^^

If you ever need to reach him, let me know. I have his phone number ...
